Should You Outsource Your SEO Work?

Should You Outsource Your SEO Work?

If you are looking to launch a website to sell a product or service, you’re probably looking around the internet to see what you need to know or do to succeed. Eventually, the term SEO – and it’s importance – will crop up, along with the help guides telling you how to do it yourself.  Doing it yourself is a lot cheaper than outsourcing to a company, so why should you bother?

Search engine optimization is one of those odd, new techniques that arrived right at the time when the average user can become an expert. Yes, you need to study SEO, but by and large the mechanics of it can be self-taught using internet forums and help guides. Yet there are companies that offer to perform SEO work for other people, and they manage to stay in business – how do they do that when it’s a skill that most people can learn? Perhaps it isn’t all so easy after all…

SEO is actually quite an involved subject, and covers many areas including the actual website design / structure, the website content, meta tags and much more. People who are new to SEO may quickly consider themselves an expert, but that doesn’t make them one. You can search Twitter, and will find a thousand profiles cheerfully insisting that the person running the account is an SEO “Guru” or expert.  SEO Expert is not a legally protected or acquired term, like happens for doctors or lawyers, so unfortunately anyone can claim to be one. And many users may genuinely feel they are an expert, and that they therefore have nothing to benefit from an SEO company. That’s the problem with new technologies.

Put simply, no one can be an expert within a short period of time. The people who run SEO service companies really are experts, who have studied the art of SEO for long periods of time. They also keep up with the trends (yes, SEO, like most things, has it’s trends – trends or techniques which are usually dictated or brought about by the Search Engines themselves, such as Google).  For example, some techniques or tools  that were once widely used and recommended are no longer used because they would now result in penalties and possibly even being banned.  New techniques will also be introduced in time too, and so it is very hard to remain ‘an SEO expert’ just from reading a few books a year or even 6 months ago……

Unless you can spare several months to learn it all yourself, you will always get better results with using an SEO expert. But you will need to be careful when selecting and be sure that you hire a real expert rather than one of the “poseurs”…….
